The Notaries Society is the representative society for hundreds of Notaries Public practising in Nigeria. There are various engagements with stakeholders by the Society with a view to ensuring that the interest and value of members of the profession enjoys best practices.

The profession
A person authorized to perform certain legal formalities, especially to draw up or certify contracts, deeds, and other documents for use in other jurisdictions is known as a Notary Public. A Notary Public is an officer of the Supreme Court of Nigeria who performs invaluable services for the legal, business, financial, and real estate communities.
Legislation
This Act may be cited as the Notaries Public Act.
1. Appointment of notaries
(1) The Chief Justice of Nigeria may appoint any fit and proper person being a legal practitioner to be a notary public for Nigeria (in this Act referred to as a “notary” or as a “notary public”). [L.N. 107 of 1955.]
(2) A notary appointed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria shall perform the same duties and exercise the same functions as a notary in England.
Qualifications
Eligibility for Application
(1) Legal Residency
Only those who are of legal residence in Nigeria can apply as a Notary public.
(2) Age requirements
A citizen can only be fit for the role of a Notary Public having surpassed the legal age of maturity which is eighteen years old.
