Qualifications

Eligibility for Application .

  • Legal Residency
  • Only those who are of legal residence in Nigeria can apply as a Notary public.

  • Age requirements
  • A citizen can only be fit for the role of a Notary Public having surpassed the legal age of maturity which is eighteen years old. Anyone below this age limit is not fit for the title of Notary Public and cannot practice the function of the same.

  • Legal Practitioner
  • Only a Legal practitioner can become a Notary Public in Nigeria. The legal practitioner must have been called to the Nigerian Bar for at least seven years.

  • Academic Training
  • To become a notary public, you have to be trained as a legal practitioner. This involves completing an undergraduate degree (known as LLB) in a Nigerian University or Foreign University.

After attaining an undergraduate degree, enrolment at the Nigerian Law School for the Bar program follows. The Nigerian Law School educates and trains law graduates in vocational and Professional Training.

Professional training for the Notary public in Nigeria is engaging in the law practice. There must be specialization in litigation for at least seven years including undergoing the mandatory Bar training and activities. This is significant for the improvement of practice skills and experiences.
